I know, I know, another eagle update..... This one is exciting!!! For those who haven't heard, last week two falconers trapped and took home a couple eagles from a depredation area in Utah, bringing the total to four eagles taken for falconry in 2019. This email is to inform folks that there are now opportunities to fill two more permits.
After a very successful GoFundMe in 2018 a few dedicated citizen scientist falconers spent countless hours on the ground monitoring, documenting, and then working with the ranchers, USDA-WS, USFWS, and Wyoming Game and Fish (WGFD), their efforts are paying dividends. The IEAA and NAFA are excited to share that a couple ranchers are pleased to offer two more opportunities for Master Class falconers, who are properly licensed, to capture and possess a golden eagle for falconry. These two permits will be for the 5th and 6th eagles to be taken in 2019.
As I mentioned in previous emails, due to regulatory issues, Wyoming could not participate in the beta version of the National Eagle Allocation Procedure that was approved by the National Flyway earlier this year at the North American Wildlife Conference. The beta version of the National Eagle Allocation Procedure was used to award the two permits in Utah. Any additional available depredation permits would be allocated to Wyoming and it would be up to the WGFD to decide how to allocated the permits. WGFD deferred to the ranchers. To ensure the allocation was fair and equitable, representatives from both the IEAA and NAFA worked with the WGFD and ranchers to facilitate a random drawing that is acceptable to the state and ranchers. To do that, we are doing another drawing for the final two permits being issued in Wyoming.
For more information on the drawing and to better understand the Who, What, When, How, and Other Considerations please got to: https://www.n-a-f-a.com/page/WYEagleAllocation2019_Part2
If you meet the requirements and would like to take part in this historic opportunity to trap one of two depredating eagles in Wyoming, please complete and submit the form located HERE before 11:00 PM MDT on June 20, 2019.
I want to say thanks to everyone who has helped make this all possible and to make 2019 an historic year for eagle falconry. These are exciting times and hopefully this paves the way to ensure eagle take for years to come.
Please remember that the ranchers will have final say in all matters. Expectation is to start trapping as soon as is practically possible.
