 President's Message

Dear Member,

Happy New Year to my falconry Family! On behalf of your Board of Directors, NAFA Committee Members, NAFA Staff, and all the NAFA leadership, I’d like to wish you all a very merry, happy, healthy, and prosperous 2018!

Reflecting on the events and accomplishments of 2017 should give all of us solace and reason to celebrate the current state of falconry in North America and, looking to the future, together we will continue to improve falconry.

For us to protect and improve falconry we must always remember something President Scott McNeff reminded us of each and every month with his President's Message, "we are all in this together!" That single statement could not be more befitting of our global community. Unified, we all succeed and NAFA, falconry, and our diverse membership benefit from our combined efforts. Having had the distinct pleasure of working with Scott while he served, first as a Director and Vice President, and then as President, I can honestly say Scott McNeff epitomizes true leadership, professionalism, and, speaking candidly, he's just a great and fun guy. Under his guidance and leadership we have seen NAFA continue to transform, our membership grow, and falconry prosper. Thankfully Scott has promised to remain engaged and part of the leadership team and, hopefully, will continue to help and guide me along the way.

As I sit down and write this email, I'm both excited and nervous about what these next two years may hold. I promise to work smart, work hard, and give you, NAFA, my best efforts along the way. If there is ever anything I can do for you never hesitate to pick the phone and call, or, if your are more comfortable sending an email, please reach out and let me know. My personal cell phone number is 214-288-0670 and for email,

New Leadership

As Scott pointed out last month, NAFA begins the new year with two new Directors and a new Vice

President. New Mountain Director Jenni Buckley of Centennial, Colorado, officially took the helm, replacing Paul Domski, in November and is already making an impact. New Central Director Robert Huber of Stillwater, Oklahoma, takes the helm January 1 replacing Director Don Roeber. If you live in the Mountain or Central Directorate, shoot your Director an email or give them a call, introduce yourself, thank them for their willingness to serve, and let them know what's important to you. The first board meeting of 2018 is in just over two weeks, January 18, call your director and give them your input. Be a part of solution, make a difference, and help NAFA be all it can be.

Lastly, new Vice President Martin Geleynse of Waterloo, Ontario (Canada), takes on the additional responsibility as NAFA's Vice President to compliment is role as Canadian Director. Martin has become a very good friend over the years and where I lack, Martin excels. Suffice it to say I'm excited to collaborate more with Martin, he's a wealth of information, is much more diplomatic than I am, and, above all else, Martin gets things done.

2018 is going to be a fantastic year!

NAFA Testimonial - Dr. Corey Roelke

When I was twelve years old in Northern Indiana, my father told me he was working with a man who was a falconer.  After spending some time visiting and hawking with local falconers, I realized I didn’t have the time to pursue the art at that point in my life.  In 2010, after I finished graduate school, the time had finally come for me to get my permit after about fifteen years of pre-apprenticeship.  While I flew redtails during my apprenticeship, I always aspired to fly ducks and upland game birds with large falcons, and am currently enjoying flying two passage tundra peregrines.  My wife Mallory flies a cast of Harris’s hawks, so I get my fill of rabbit hawking as well.

I’m a recent member of NAFA, having joined the organization five years ago.  Since then, I’ve made lasting friendships with people from around the world and seen hawking I couldn’t imagine as a twelve year old.  I’ve learned the history and the value of a strong, international organization that represents falconry in the three countries of North America.  Without NAFA, we would not have falconry as we know it in the United States.  It’s important in this age of instant communication for falconers to put forward their most reasonable and articulate voices to speak on behalf of all those practicing the art in North America.  NAFA is a platform for our voices to be heard at the federal level and to assist individual states and state falconry clubs to make better regulations that benefit our community.  Through NAFA, falconers have the ability to put forward a well defined ethical code that defines how we practice our sport.  As our society loses their connections to the land, wild spaces, and the organisms that live in those wild places, ethics and education play an increasing role in our survival as falconers.  NAFA is the only organization that has shown the power over multiple decades to lead that charge.  While we may not always agree on all issues, we can all stand together as falconers with one voice that unites us all as participants in the most historic and grand of all field sports.
